Sisal and polypropylene twine - similarities and differences

Both polypropylene and sisal ropes are resistant to mechanical damage. They are durable and do not stretch. They are used in industries such as gardening, agriculture, construction and industry. What are the differences between them? We will try to answer this question.

Features of sisal cords

Sisal cords are made of natural yarn made of agave fibers - a tropical plant found in a humid and hot climate. Sisal ropes are 100% natural and biodegradable. So they are environmentally friendly. Sisal fiber is characterized by exceptional strength and hardness, thanks to which sisal yarn has high load strength, resistance to abrasion and mechanical damage. The features of sisal cords also include resistance to weather conditions, including high temperatures. Sisal twine does not change its properties under the influence of UV radiation, which is why it is often used to tie up plants in greenhouses, including those located in greenhouses. The use of sisal twine is very wide. In addition to the aforementioned gardening works, sisal strings are used in industry, sailing, construction and even transport. The strength of the sisal rope increases in proportion to its thickness. Sisal ropes are also appreciated in the floristic and handicraft industries. Agave fiber has a natural, light color. Which, combined with the biodegradability of the yarn, makes it suitable for hand-made projects. Cat scratchers are also made of sisal yarn.

Properties of polypropylene twine

Polypropylene ropes are made of durable and weather-resistant synthetic fibers. This type of rope is characterized by the highest breaking strength. This is very important from the point of view of agriculture. Polypropylene twine is used in agricultural machines, such as balers or cube makers with a high degree of crushing. The breaking strength estimated for polypropylene cords is almost 10 kg higher than for sisal cords. Other properties of the polypropylene cord include resistance to humidity and high temperatures. Polypropylene ropes are used in many industries such as agriculture, construction, industry, transport and shipping. Synthetic yarn is not biodegradable. Which, from the point of view of some industries, may be a disadvantage.

What gardening twine?

Both sisal and polypropylene ropes are used in the horticulture industry. However, sisal fibers are used much more often due to the ecological dimension of the yarn and its higher resistance to UV radiation. Sisal ropes work well for tying seedlings in greenhouses, poles, they are used in orchard nurseries and when marking flower beds. The use of ecological sisal yarn is safe both from the point of view of plants and animals that can stay in the close vicinity of the garden. Sisal twine can be used both in home gardens and specialized, large farms.

What kind of twine for agricultural work?

In agriculture, yarn made of synthetic fibers is used, as well as those made of natural sisal yarn. In Poland, polypropylene ropes are more often used in agriculture due to their greater resistance to breaking. Synthetic twines are successfully used in baling presses or tying bundles. Sisal yarn can also be used in this industry. However, it works well in specialized organic farms, in small square balers with a low degree of compaction, or in binding less dense bales. Sisal twine can be used to manually tie bales or tie up plants. Then, the undoubted advantage of sisal fibers is that they decompose naturally, are environmentally friendly and do not pose any threat to animals on farms.
